Grants focus on programs addressing food security and nutrition issues in San Francisco's Tenderloin

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 25, 2019) – Dignity Health Saint Francis Memorial Hospital has awarded $117,122 in grants to two local nonprofit organizations through its annual community grants program. Both nonprofits were recognized for their commitment to improving health outcomes and quality of life for San Franciscans most in need.

“Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and Saint Francis Foundation continue to focus on improving the health outcomes of San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents through our Tenderloin Health Improvement Partnership (T)LHIP,” said Saint Francis Memorial Hospital President David Klein, MD, MBA. “These community partnerships enable us to dig deep in addressing food security and nutrition issues so closely connected with vibrant quality of life and overall health.”

Grants were awarded to the following organizations:

La Cocina: $82,347 for the La Cocina Municipal Marketplace to foster entrepreneurial opportunities for immigrants and women of color, provide affordable food options for Tenderloin residents, and transform the 101 Hyde Street vacant space into an active community asset. In partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, and St. Anthony’s Client Safety Services, La Cocina Marketplace will provide business expansion opportunities for women, immigrant and minority-owned businesses and create 30 new full-time positions for low-income individuals. It will also provide access to affordable foods reflecting the Tenderloin neighborhood’s diversity.

The community grants were awarded in January. Saint Francis has awarded yearly community grants since the early 1990s to promote health and wellness in San Francisco.
