Hospital's Sixth Floor Could House Up to 40 Patients

SAN FRANCISCO (April 6, 2020) — Dignity Health Saint Francis Memorial Hospital has opened the city’s first COVID-19 treatment unit in response to the current public health emergency. The unit, opening today, is staffed through a partnership between Dignity Health, UCSF Health, and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Opening with ten beds, the unit has the capacity to expand to 40 beds along with eight intensive care beds.

“There has never been a more important time for hospitals to work together, and I’m grateful that here in San Francisco our many health systems have a long history of partnering to keep San Franciscans healthy,” said President and CEO David Klein, MD, MBA. “Saint Francis is proud to provide a dedicated unit for this important work.”

A public health issue of COVID-19’s magnitude must be addressed with creative solutions. The Hospital Council—comprised of health care organizations working in tandem with the San Francisco Department of Public Health and the Mayor’s Office—has been working to identify solutions since the beginning of this crisis. This collaborative effort to create a dedicated care center for COVID-19 patients will help ensure hospital care is available for anyone who needs it.

“Dedicated physicians, nurses, and other caregivers in hospitals across the city are working tirelessly to keep our patients and communities safe and healthy,” continued Dr. Klein. “They have our gratitude and support as they work to flatten this pandemic’s curve.”
