The knowledgeable physicians in the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute can meet your musculoskeletal needs, helping keep you in the game. Sports medicine physicians provide support for professional sport tournaments and performing arts and dance companies.
Orthopedic Surgeons are skilled in both surgical and non-surgical treatments, offering a full range of arthroscopic procedures and joint reconstructions.
Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute Physicians are specialists in the field of sports medicine and trained to address the unique needs of athletes. They examine, evaluate and treat a wide variety of sports and activity-related injuries and musculoskeletal conditions.
Podiatrists evaluate foot and ankle problems in patients of all ages, and provide both surgical and non-surgical treatments, including customized orthotics.
Physiatrists use diagnostic techniques such as electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies to diagnose and provide expertise on rehabilitation regimens, as well as procedures such as spinal injections and nerve blocks.
Remy Ardizzone, DPM - Podiatry
Dr. Ardizzone is a board certified podiatrist specializing in treating all aspects of sports-related foot and ankle injuries. Her practice includes recreational to professional level sports injuries and all aspects of musculoskeletal complaints of the foot and ankle.
Meredith Bean, MD - Sports Medicine
Dr. Bean is board certified in sports medicine and family medicine. She specializes in musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, as well as helps individuals remain active and avoid injury. Having been a competitive athlete herself, she understands the unique needs of athletes. She is passionate about helping competitive and recreational athletes get back into action as well as helping others who just want to be more active.
Richard L. Blake, DPM - Podiatry
Dr. Blake is an expert in biomechanics of the lower extremity. He invented the Inverted Orthotic Technique, which is used internationally to help many injuries, especially those related to severe pronation.
Jane Denton, DPM - Podiatry
Dr. Denton has delivered podiatric care in the Center for Sports Medicine for almost three decades. She has a following with the San Francisco and Oakland Ballet companies and treats dancers from the San Francisco Ballet School and the Marin Dance Theatre.
Hoylond Hong, MD - Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation
Dr. Hong is board certified in pain medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. He combines conservative care and diagnostic techniques to identify and treat underlying musculoskeletal/nerve disorders.
Susan Lewis, MD - Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Lewis is a board certified orthopedic surgeon. She enjoys seeing all kinds of patients, from weekend warriors to top-level elite athletes. She also enjoys teaching and lecturing on sports medicine topics and has a special interest in women's sports medicine issues.
Victor A. Prieto, MD - Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Prieto is an orthopedic surgeon who has been in practice for more than 20 years. He is the medical director for the Center for Sports Medicine and specializes in hip replacements, knee replacements, and shoulder surgery.
Robert Purchase, MD – Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Purchase is a board-certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon as well as the Medical Director of shoulder surgery at SFMH Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute. Widely recognized as an expert in complex and revision shoulder arthroplasty, patients travel from all over California to have their shoulder replacement surgery performed by him. He treats all manner of shoulder disease from arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff tears, to revision reverse total shoulder replacements.
Ronald L. Valmassy, DPM - Podiatry
Dr. Valmassy has a special interest in pediatric and adolescent sports related injuries, the evaluation and treatment of lower extremity problems, and surgical correction of muscular abnormalities.
Stephen Van Pelt, MD - Sports and Family Medicine
Dr. Van Pelt has been a Sports and Family Medicine physician and general surgeon with the Center for Sports Medicine since 1987. He is frequently in the Saint Francis operating room assisting in orthopedic and spine procedures.
Christine Yoon - Nurse Practitioner
Christine Yoon is a nurse practitioner with the SFMH Center for Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute. She received her undergraduate degree from USC in health promotion and disease prevention and her Masters of Science in Nursing from USF. She is also a certified Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.
