French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) which along with Arroyo Grande Community Hospital (AGCH) and Marian Regional Medical Center (MRMC) are Dignity Health's Central Coast hospitals, is pleased to congratulate its San Luis Diagnostic Center Medical Director Dr. Fred. S. Vernacchia, for being honored as the 2016 Physician of the Year by the Central Coast Medical Association on Friday, January 29th at their First Annual Banquet of the Year.

Dr. Vernacchia was chosen from a select group of local health care professional nominees that have provided an ongoing commitment to the Central Coast community.

Dr. Vernacchia and the San Luis Diagnostic Center joined FHMC on May 1st, 2015, becoming one of the hospital’s convenient outpatient imaging centers. With the San Luis Diagnostic addition, FHMC continues to bring together the latest in diagnostic imaging technology and additional high-end diagnostic services not currently available at any other San Luis Obispo County hospital. San Luis Diagnostic joined Dignity Health Central Coast’s three on-campus imaging centers and eight outpatient imaging service centers.

Dr. Vernacchia attended medical school and completed his residency at University of California, San Francisco. He began practicing radiology in San Luis Obispo in 1986. Dr. Vernacchia founded San Luis Diagnostic Center in 1994 because he was committed to providing state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and techniques. In fact, San Luis Diagnostic Center was the first facility in the county to offer Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, Digital Mammography, 3D Bone Mineral Analysis, MR Angiography, CT Angiography, Multi-detector CT, 3T MRI, 4D-ultrasound for prenatal diagnosis, Virtual colonoscopy, and to have a permanent PET/CT scanner for cancer detection.

Dr. Vernacchia has authored numerous medical articles, lectured to other radiologists internationally and has served as a director on many nonprofit boards.

“We would like to congratulate Dr. Vernacchia for his honor and his achievements within the Central Coast community,” says FHMC President/CEO Alan Iftiniuk. “The Central Coast Medical Association is an established non-profit organization that focuses on improving the quality of health care, service, and safety within the Central Coast community. That is exactly what Dr. Vernacchia continues to provide with French Hospital Medical Center and Dignity Health Central Coast.”

The Central Coast Medical Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1892 that focuses on protecting public health and preserving community and physician wellness.
