Our residency program is allowing us to cater to the needs of the next generation of emergency physicians. We are seeking motivated future leaders who want to help us achieve our vision: to become the premier emergency medicine training program in the state and region.
Investing in the Future of Medical Education
Dr. Abdul Waheed
We're thrilled to announce a significant step forward for our Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs at Dignity Health East Valley Arizona! Creighton University School of Medicine - Phoenix will become our new sponsoring institution.
This partnership with Creighton, a respected academic leader known for its commitment to similar values, will enhance our already successful programs by:
- Strengthening our existing relationship with Creighton.
- Providing access to additional resources and Creighton's nationally recognized reputation for GME excellence.
- Creating opportunities to expand our GME programs and programs for other healthcare professions.
- Aligning us with our sister hospitals within the Creighton network.
- Reinforcing our mission through collaboration with a like-minded Catholic organization.
While Creighton University School of Medicine - Phoenix will be the sponsor, our Dignity Health East Valley Arizona GME programs will remain distinct from the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance. We're committed to a smooth transition and will keep you updated on any changes. For now, the employment status of our residents, coordinators, and directors remains the same.
As we move forward, Dr. Abdul Waheed will serve as Designated Institutional Officer (DIO), and Dr. Erik Mattison as associate DIO.
We appreciate the hard work and dedication that have made our GME programs a success and look forward to a bright future with Creighton!

About Our Emergency Medicine Residency Program
Our mission is to train emergency medicine physicians with a focus on clinical excellence, compassion, and community to provide quality care and social justice for all. We strive to develop clinical and academic leaders through innovative education.
We will achieve our goal of becoming a first-rate emergency medicine training program through the “3 C’s”:
Clinical Excellence
Our academic hub, Chandler Regional Medical Center, is a high acuity, Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center with more than 70,000 ED visits annually and has won the community choice best Emergency Department in the East Valley. Our sister community hospital, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center includes a brand new, on-site Pediatric ED in collaboration with Phoenix Children’s. Our emphasis is to provide safe, efficient, and evidence-based care to the community.
Innovative Curriculum
We balance high-yield emergency medicine rotations with an innovative didactic curriculum, which emphasizes not only a structured core content review using the most effective tools available, but allows for active learning: short lectures, simulation, oral boards, small groups, escape rooms and games.
Diverse & Inclusive Community
Knowing that diverse teams promote excellence, we value building an inclusive community of individuals who feel supported by their peers, colleagues, and faculty. We uplift the Common Spirit mission of improving the health of those we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while advancing social justice for all.
