Investing in the Future of Medical Education

Dr Abdul Waheed

We're thrilled to announce a significant step forward for our Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs at Dignity Health East Valley Arizona! Creighton University School of Medicine - Phoenix will become our new sponsoring institution.

This partnership with Creighton, a respected academic leader known for its commitment to similar values, will enhance our already successful programs by:

  • Strengthening our existing relationship with Creighton.
  • Providing access to additional resources and Creighton's nationally recognized reputation for GME excellence.
  • Creating opportunities to expand our GME programs and programs for other healthcare professions.
  • Aligning us with our sister hospitals within the Creighton network.
  • Reinforcing our mission through collaboration with a like-minded Catholic organization.

While Creighton University School of Medicine - Phoenix will be the sponsor, our Dignity Health East Valley Arizona GME programs will remain distinct from the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance. We're committed to a smooth transition and will keep you updated on any changes. For now, the employment status of our residents, coordinators, and directors remains the same.

As we move forward, Dr. Abdul Waheed will serve as Designated Institutional Officer (DIO), and Dr. Erik Mattison as associate DIO.

We appreciate the hard work and dedication that have made our GME programs a success and look forward to a bright future with Creighton!

Our Internal Medicine Residency Program

Dignity Health’s newest internal medicine residency program, located in Phoenix’s beautiful East Valley, is built on humankindness and interactive learning models. We listen to you and encourage your ideas while preparing you for the profession of a lifetime.

Meet Dr. Allan Markus MD, MS, MBA, FACP, Program Director

Options: lots of rotation concentration options to support your career path

Our program allows you to tailor your residency experience to your desired career path. With more than 26 selective and elective rotations, you can package your training and know that over 120 expert faculty members are ready to mentor, partner,  challenge, guide, and, above all, listen.

Work-life balance

Work-Life Balance is not just a noon conference at CUEVA. It is incorporated in everything we do. We have wellness days built into our ambulatory rotations; no overnight call; retreats focusing on wellness and resiliency, and American College of Physicians (ACP) wellness champions as faculty members.

Focus on realizing your potential - the future is now

Our program is designed to minimize obstacles to growth and will challenge our residents to routinely contribute the input, ideas, and talents that will help nurture and grow our program. We will listen, and respond proactively and promptly.

CUEVA IM Residency Pledge on Equity, Inclusion, and Welcoming to Address Healthcare Disparities in our Community

Our residency program strives for a culture in which the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion/belonging are infused into all of our clinical, teaching and research activities.

We hope to foster a culturally rich, diverse and welcoming learning environment in which trainees learn to provide individualized care to patients with diverse ethnic, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds across the gender spectrum.

We are working hard to attract learners and faculty who want to contribute to this goal, and who are reflective of the community and the world that we serve.

Take a virtual tour of our East Valley hospitals.

Chandler Regional Medical Center is a 429-bed, Level 1 Trauma Center which includes a variety of health care services and a newly added Tower D. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center is a 197-bed hospital which opened in 2006 and is expanding with the development of the Women’s and Children’s Pavilion – a joint project between Mercy Gilbert and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Enjoy this short video tour showcasing both hospitals where we pride ourselves on teamwork, innovation, faith and compassion.

Hot opportunities in the Valley of the Sun

By its geographical location alone, our residency program provides far more outdoor adventure opportunities than most – including hiking, swimming, and exploring year-round. “Indoor” recreation include thriving arts and culture, dining and entertainment, and more, here in the East Valley and only 30 minutes away in Phoenix. The East Valley offers great communities to live in and neighbors to get to know.

The internal medicine residency program at Dignity Health East Valley hospitals and academic clinics encourages comprehensive learning through a highly personalized curriculum. Faculty mentor residents to develop leadership and teaching skills development and encourage residents to help shape the growth and design of this GME program.
