Residency Faculty

Gary Zane, DOGary Zane, DO (he/him)

Program Director

Dr. Zane has been dedicated to the development of the program, faculty, and residents as a founding member of the residency.  Passionate about teaching and modeling patient care, he precepts residents both on our inpatient Family Medicine Teaching Service, and outpatient at Santa Cruz Community Health, our residency’s FMP, where he also co-leads our Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Clinic. He remains engaged in direct patient care with Dignity Health in Watsonville, a certified Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), where he regularly trains medical students.  He also completed the UCSF Faculty Development Fellowship, focusing his scholarly project on creating residency community medicine projects based on community needs in collaboration with our Community Advisory Council.

Prior to Program Director, Dr. Zane was our Associate Program Director leading our Inpatient Medicine Rotations at Dominican Hospital, the Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee, and the founding Director for our Osteopathic Medicine for the Underserved program (see "Osteopathic Medicine/Osteopathic Recognition" folder).  He continues to co-direct our Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Curriculum, and has established community ties with local high schools and UCSC athletics for our residents.

Gary has East Coast roots with a West Coast demeanor, arriving in California by way of Philadelphia. He graduated medical school from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he completed a teaching fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM).  He then completed Family Medicine Residency at Crozer-Keystone, training at ChesPenn FQHC, in a diverse community bordering West Philadelphia.

He is deeply committed to residency education, having served as a faculty physician for Crozer-Keystone prior to his move to Santa Cruz, where he was Director of Medical Student Education.  His clinical interests include musculoskeletal medicine, as well as the mind-body connection, taking a holistic approach to patient care.  He resides in Aptos with his family, enjoys hiking, travel and playing basketball.
