Understanding Who Needs Trauma Care

A person who needs trauma care is someone who has been injured due to an accident, such as a motor vehicle collision, pedestrian struck by a vehicle, fall from a great height, ground-level fall, hiking, or bicycling. Trauma can also result from violent acts such as shootings and stabbings. Major trauma refers to injuries that are life threatening or could potentially lead to life threatening conditions. It is the leading cause of death and disability for people under age 44. The time between the injury and receiving care at a highly specialized trauma center is critical in saving lives and reducing long-term disabilities. Trauma Centers provide the advanced care needed to improve survival rates and outcomes, often making  the difference between life and death.
