Bariatric Surgery: The Questions I Hear Every Day

When patients sit down with me in the clinic, they usually come in with a mix of hope, nerves, and a long list of questions. And that’s exactly how it should be. Surgery is a big decision, and understanding your options is the first step toward a healthier future.

Here are the questions I hear most often—and how I typically answer them in real conversations with my patients.

1. Am I a Good Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

It depends on several factors. We look at your BMI, medical conditions, and overall readiness for change. Generally, patients with a BMI over 40—or over 35 with conditions like diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure—are candidates. But numbers don’t tell the whole story. I want to understand your goals, your health history, and your commitment to making lifestyle changes after surgery. That’s where success really starts.

2. What Type of Surgery is Right for me?

There’s no “one-size-fits-all.” I offer a range of options: gastric sleeve, Duodenal Switch (SADI procedure), gastric bypass, and newer endoscopic procedures like ESG (endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty) or TORe. Each procedure has unique benefits and considerations. We’ll talk through your medical history, eating patterns, and goals, then decide together which approach makes the most sense for you.

3. What are the Risks?

Any surgery carries some risk, but bariatric procedures today are safer than ever. Potential complications—such as bleeding, infection, or leaks—are rare but possible. Nutritional deficiencies can occur if follow-up care is skipped. That’s why I emphasize education, preparation, and ongoing support. When you commit to the whole process, not just the operation, outcomes are excellent.

4. How Much Weight Will I Lose - and how Fast?

On average, patients lose 60–70% of excess body weight within 12 to 18 months. The exact amount depends on your procedure, metabolism, and daily habits. Surgery is a powerful tool to help you get started—but lasting results come from the choices you make afterward. My job is to help you set realistic expectations and give you the support you need to succeed.

5. Will my Insurance Cover the Surgery?

The vast majority of insurances cover these procedures (more than 95%) in Arizona. Many insurance plans do cover bariatric surgery, but requirements vary. Our team works directly with your insurance provider to sort out eligibility, pre-authorization, and any costs you should expect. Transparency is important—you’ll know exactly what to expect before you move forward.

6. What Changes do I Need to Make Before and After Surgery?

Think of surgery as the beginning of your journey—not the end. Before surgery, you’ll follow a specific diet and complete some medical evaluations. Afterward, you’ll go through structured stages of eating, take supplements if needed, and attend regular follow-ups. My team and I are with you at every step, providing detailed guidance so you never feel like you’re figuring it out alone.

7. Can I get Pregnant After Surgery?

Yes—and many women actually find it easier after losing weight. I usually recommend waiting 12 to 18 months before trying to conceive. That allows your body to stabilize nutritionally and hormonally and ensures the healthiest possible pregnancy.

8. What Happens if I Regain Weight?

Weight regain can happen, but it’s not inevitable. That’s why long-term support is such a big part of my practice. We offer nutrition counseling, behavioral support, and revisional procedures when appropriate. My message to patients is always this: you don’t have to face weight challenges alone—not before surgery, and not in the years afterward.

Final Thoughts

For me, bariatric surgery isn’t just about helping someone lose weight—it’s about helping them gain health, energy, and confidence. If you’re considering this path, keep asking questions. Stay curious. And know that my team and I are here to guide you with clarity, honesty, and compassion.
