Breaking Down the Myths: What Bariatric Surgery Really Is

By Shawn Stevenson, DO, FACS – Chief of Bariatric and Foregut Surgery, Dignity Health

Breaking Down the Myths of bariatric surgery

When people hear “bariatric or weight loss surgery” they often picture a last-ditch effort for weight loss or a shortcut for those who “just need to diet and exercise.” As a surgeon who’s spent decades helping patients reclaim their health through metabolic and weight loss procedures, I can tell you: that perception couldn’t be further from the truth.

Let’s unpack some of the most persistent myths—and the reality behind them.

Myth #1: Bariatric Surgery Is the Easy Way Out

Reality: There’s nothing “easy” about choosing surgery. My patients undergo rigorous medical evaluations, nutritional counseling, and psychological assessments before ever entering the OR. Post-op, they commit to lifelong changes in diet, activity, and follow-up care. Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool—but it’s not magic. It works best when paired with education, support, and personal commitment.

Myth #2: It’s Just About Weight Loss

Reality: Bariatric surgery is metabolic surgery. Yes, it helps with weight reduction, but its real power lies in how it transforms health. We see dramatic improvements in type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, joint pain, and even fertility. For many, it’s not about vanity—it’s about survival.

Myth #3: It’s Risky and Dangerous

Reality:  Every surgery carries risk, but modern bariatric procedures—especially those performed laparoscopically—are safer than ever. In fact, the risk of remaining morbidly obese far outweighs the surgical risk. The safety and long term decreased hospitalizations, decreased medications etc. are exactly why insurances pay for this type of surgery.  Our team uses advanced techniques and evidence-based protocols to ensure the safest outcomes possible.

Myth #4: You’ll Just Gain the Weight Back

Reality: Not true, in our practice greater than 70% of patients are still successful after 5 years. Long-term success depends on the patient’s commitment and the support system around them. That’s why we emphasize follow-up care, nutritional guidance, and behavioral health. When patients stay engaged, the results are not only sustainable—they’re life-changing.

Myth #5: It’s Only for the Severely Obese

Reality: Bariatric surgery isn’t one-size-fits-all. We now offer incisionless options like Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) for patients who may not qualify for traditional surgery but still struggle with obesity-related health issues. The field has evolved—and so have the criteria.

Final Thoughts

Obesity is a complex disease, not a character flaw. Bariatric surgery is a medically proven, life-saving intervention—not a shortcut or a failure. My mission is to help patients understand their options, feel empowered, and receive compassionate care without judgment.

If you or someone you love is considering bariatric surgery, don’t let myths stand in the way. Let’s talk science, not stigma.
