PHOENIX, Ariz. (October 13, 2021) – Dignity Health and Kindred Healthcare today broke ground on Dignity Health East Valley Rehabilitation Hospital – Gilbert, a 50,000-square-foot inpatient rehabilitation hospital. The facility, which is the second of its kind in the East Valley under the joint venture between Dignity Health and Kindred Healthcare, will help meet the growing need for inpatient rehabilitation services in the community. The hospital is expected to open by the fourth quarter of calendar year 2022, subject to several regulatory and other approvals.

The two-story, 40-bed facility will feature all private rooms and focus on acute rehabilitation for patients who suffer from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, complex neurological disorders, orthopedic conditions, multiple trauma, amputation and other injuries or disorders. The facility will be located at 1850 South Santan Village Parkway in Gilbert, Arizona.

The facility will also house multidisciplinary therapy gymnasiums, which will be outfitted with the latest therapeutic technologies, including augmented reality balance training, therapy bionics and a full-body exoskeleton. The hospital will also include a therapeutic courtyard with exterior amenities designed to promote patient ambulation and activity.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Kindred Healthcare to expand and provide inpatient rehabilitation services to our East Valley residents,” says Mark Slyter, President and CEO of Dignity Health Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers. “This new rehabilitation hospital will help continue our efforts to meet the growing demand in the community for these types of medical services.”

The continued partnership between Dignity Health and Kindred Healthcare further emphasizes both organizations strong commitment to provide the East Valley community with the highest quality of care balanced with compassion and humankindness.

“We are thrilled to break ground today on a project that strengthens our partnership with Dignity Health and extends our ability to deliver compassionate care and outstanding patient outcomes to those in the community seeking hope, healing and recovery,” said Russ Bailey, President of Kindred Rehabilitation Services. “This new hospital will allow us to continue helping East Valley residents regain their abilities and independence and ultimately, return home.”

Under terms of the joint venture creating Dignity Health East Valley Rehabilitation Hospital, both Kindred and Dignity Health are stakeholders.

The new facility is the second Dignity Health freestanding rehabilitation hospital in the East Valley and the latest in a series of major partnerships for the organization. Dignity Health in Arizona began primarily with acute care hospitals including: Arizona General Hospitals – Laveen and Mesa, Chandler Regional Medical Center, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Westgate Medical Center and Yavapai Regional Medical Center. From this foundation, Dignity Health has expanded rapidly in Arizona in recent years and grown into a comprehensive health care system, which includes imaging centers, clinics, specialty hospitals, physician groups, urgent cares, insurance providers and other clinical partnerships.

Kindred in Arizona currently operates the aforementioned freestanding rehabilitation hospital, Dignity Health East Valley Rehabilitation in Chandler, and manages two behavioral health hospitals in the state, Talas Harbor on Buckeye in Phoenix and Talas Harbor at Bullhead City.
