3-D mammography now available

Diagnostic imaging plays a vital role in the early detection of breast cancer and if needed, an individualized treatment plan. The Women’s Center is proud to now offer 3-D mammography with the Hologic Selenia Dimensions System. 

The system produces more detailed images of breast tissue than traditional mammography by capturing 3-D slices of the breast, all at different angles, in order to detect even the smallest lumps.

The system features imaging that is fast and clinically superior compared with 2-D imaging. The exam is performed in a rapid 3.7-second scan time for greater patient comfort and low patient dose, due to the elimination of 2-D X-ray exposures.

The new 3-D mammography system also features SmartCurve™ Breast Stabilization, which reduces pain and the discomfort during mammograms. The curved design compression device mirrors the shape of a women’s breast to reduce pinching and apply uniform compression over the entire breast for added comfort. 

3-D mammography is: 

  • Proven to detect 20%-65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone, an average increase of 41%.
  • Proven to reduce callbacks by up to 40% compared to 2D alone.
  • FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.

The machine takes multiple images in seconds and the doctor views them, one slice at a time, in 1 mm layers. In addition to 3-D mammograms, our Women’s Center also offers breast MRI, breast ultrasounds, and other services.
