A sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure that limits the amount of food intake by reducing the size of the stomach.
During this procedure, a thin vertical sleeve of stomach is created using a stapling device, and the excised portion of the stomach is removed. The sleeve is about the size of a banana.
With the gastric sleeve, food passes through the digestive tract in the usual order, allowing vitamins and nutrients to be fully absorbed into the body. No postoperative adjustments are required and the results are usually good for weight loss and resolution of associated health issues.
