Surge in online weight-loss drugs raises concerns among physicians

Dignity Health weight loss surgeon encourages medical guidance during National Nutrition Month

Gilbert, Ariz. (March 20, 2026) – As demand for GLP-1 medications used for weight loss continues to rise in popularity, a leading weight loss surgeon with the Dignity Health Medical Group is issuing a critical warning about the risks of ordering these drugs online without medical supervision.

“While GLP-1 medications can be a powerful tool, they are not a standalone solution for weight loss,” said Dr. Shawn Stevenson, chief of foregut and bariatric surgery with the Dignity Health Medical Group. “The safest and most effective approach is to take these medications under physician-guided care where you can be regularly evaluated, supported nutritionally and monitored closely to ensure the medication is working as intended and safely.”

Dr. Stevenson’s warning comes just weeks after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration  raised significant concerns with unapproved GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss,  citing that illegal online sales of these medications can be risky for patients. (FDA

Dr. Stevenson highlights several key dangers of ordering GLP-1 medications online:

  • Counterfeit or altered products: Many online sources sell products that are not FDA-approved and may contain incorrect ingredients, harmful contaminants or inconsistent dosages.

  • Lack of medical history review: Without physician oversight, people may be prescribed medication that interacts dangerously with existing conditions or other medications.

  • No monitoring of side effects: GLP-1 medications can have significant side effects for some patients. Without a doctor monitoring progress, these may go unmanaged and lead to complications.

  • Absence of comprehensive care: Effect weight management is more than just medication. It requires dietary guidance, lifestyle modifications and ongoing support. These elements are often missing from online prescription services.

Dr. Stevenson says healthy and sustainable weight management is best navigated with a team of experts. The Dignity Health in Arizona bariatric surgery and weight loss program is home to bariatric surgeons, registered  dietitians and therapists, among others, who collaborate to develop individualized plans for care of patients.

“During National Nutrition Month, my goal is to encourage the community to make safe and informed decisions when it comes to their  weight loss and management journey,” said Dr. Stevenson. “We are here and ready to consult with you and build a plan of care that helps you reach your goals and obtain lasting results.”
