Siena Hospital and San Martin Hospital Achieve Accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program®

Centers meet national quality standards and criteria to become Comprehensive Centers delivering safe, high-quality metabolic and bariatric patient care

LAS VEGAS, February 24, 2023 – Both the Siena Campus and San Martin Campus of Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican Hospitals recently achieved accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®). Patients in the Las Vegas valley seeking surgical treatment for obesity and its related conditions can now turn to two high-quality, nationally accredited programs delivering care at the highest standards of patient safety and quality.

What it means: Both Siena Hospital and San Martin Hospital are now accredited as MBSAQIP Comprehensive Centers for metabolic and bariatric surgery. MBSAQIP is a joint Quality Program of the American College of Surgeons (ASC) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). Standards ensure that patients receive multidisciplinary medical care, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. Accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for patients with obesity.

Why it matters: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 93 million adults in the United States are affected by obesity and that number continues to increase. The disease of obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, among other health risks. Metabolic and bariatric surgery has proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to obesity. The ACS and the ASMBS developed accreditation standards for metabolic and bariatric surgery to assist patients with obesity in identifying centers that provide optimal patient care.

Thomas Burns, Interim President and CEO of San Martin Hospital, said, “These accreditations demonstrate our commitment to quality patient care as we continue to enhance our surgical capabilities at San Martin. Quality care begins with expertly trained staff and the leadership of experienced bariatric surgeons, which we have at both Siena and San Martin hospitals. Working in concert with our tremendous support teams, our surgeons maintain programs with the expertise to consistently produce safe, high-quality patient care with positive outcomes.”

Go deeper: To earn MBSAQIP accreditation, both hospitals had to meet essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure and patient care pathways, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. After applying for MBSAQIP accreditation, centers undergo an extensive site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon who reviews the center's structure, processes, and clinical outcomes data. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its surgical outcomes and identifying opportunities for quality improvement.
