Surgical Procedures for Weight Loss Surgery

We offer several weight loss procedures, each offering unique benefits and helping with weight loss in different ways. Minimally invasive robot assisted surgery is also available through the St. Rose Dominican Surgical Weight Loss Program. Talk to your doctor about all treatment options, as well as the associated benefits and risks.

Gastric Bypass

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the most common weight loss procedure, involves creating a small (2-3 ounce) stomach pouch by stapling the top part of the stomach. The rest of the stomach remains but is disconnected. Surgeons also bypass parts of the intestine, which decreases calorie and nutrient absorption, promotes satiety, suppresses hunger, and often reverses Type 2 diabetes.

This procedure is typically performed using a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique, though open surgery may be used based on medical history.

There are many benefits to sleeve gastrectomy as a surgical weight loss option:

  • Hormonal changes suppress hunger and reduce appetite
  • Restricts the amount of food that can be consumed
  • May lead to conditions that increase energy expenditure
  • Typical maintenance of > 50% excess weight loss

Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)

Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure removing 80% of the stomach, creating a banana-sized pouch. This new stomach holds significantly less food, reducing calorie intake, yet still functions normally. As it avoids intestinal bypass, it's performed laproscopically.

This most common bariatric surgery helps patients feel fuller sooner and longer, decreasing portion sizes. It also significantly resolves obesity-related comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.

There are many benefits to sleeve gastric bypass as a surgical weight loss option:

  • Limits the amount of food your stomach can take in, but does not affect how your stomach functions.
  • It reduces how much food you can eat after surgery, but places fewer restrictions on what types of food you can eat, unlike the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
  • Requires no bypass or re-routing of the food stream.
  • Usually involves only an overnight stay in the hospital
  • Induces hormonal changes that suppress hunger and reduce appetite.

Weight Loss Support Groups – It’s a Journey, Not a Race

Surgical weight loss can be life-changing — and that requires a lot of courage, care, and support before and after your visit to the hospital. At Dignity Health – St. Rose Dominican, our team of weight loss experts is here to guide you with experienced, quality care every step of the way. One way we accomplish this is with our online support group.

These small group sessions provide the opportunity to share your story with others who are experiencing many of the same feelings and concerns. It’s a place to celebrate successes, share challenges, and meet others who could act as a strong support system for each other. These can be very helpful for our patients and we recommend attending at least a couple sessions.

The online support group meets every third Wednesday of the month, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.
