San Martin Hospital continues in the tradition of the hospital’s patron saint
What:
16th Annual San Martin Hospital Pet Blessing and Animal Fair
Strut out your mutt, kitty, pony, or reptile for a day in the sun and a blessing. Fur babies, feathered friends, pot-bellied pigs, horses and iguanas are all welcome at a pet-focused outing, featuring a variety of pet-related booths and activities.
- Every attendee will receive a gift from the San Martin campus
- Refreshments
- Animal-related booths
- Demonstrations from local animal agility teams.
Prizes for contest winners:
- Best pet costume
- Pet/owner look-alikes
- Best pet trick
The event culminates in a non-denominational blessing over pets and their owners, followed by individual blessings of beloved beasts. Blessing will take place at 2:45.

Why:
Saint Martín de Porres, the 16th century saint after whom San Martín Hospital is named, was known for his undivided care for animals and people alike. St. Rose Dominican is proud to continue in his tradition, carrying forward this annual family- and pet-friendly event.

Martín de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, on December 9, 1579. Canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1962, he became the first saint of African descent in the Americas. At the age of 24, he was given the habit of a Dominican lay Brother, providing physical and spiritual care to the sick and poor, including slaves. He maintained an animal hospital, and established an orphanage for poor children.
