Child Life Specialists
When a child is hospitalized, they experience a variety of stressful events that can be overwhelming, curbing their natural ability to cope and heal. As with adults, hospital stays may lead children to feelings of fear, confusion, loss of control and isolation, and may cause negative effects on a child’s physical and emotional health.
Child Life Specialists are trained professionals who help children cope with the stress and uncertainty of illness, injury, disability and hospitalization.
Our Child Life Specialists goals are to:
- Prepare children for medical procedures or treatment
- Reduce the stress of hospitalization
- Provide support to patients and their families
- Promote normal growth and development
These goals are accomplished through the use of therapeutic play and developmentally-appropriate activities for patients; educating and preparing children for medical procedures; and serving as a resource for parents and other professionals regarding child development and hospitalization issues.
