Every woman deserves a life free of fibroid symptoms.

Fibroid Treatment

Fibroid treatment, an OB/GYN Service of Northridge Family Medicine at Northridge Hospital, is just one part of the comprehensive services available for women at all stages of life, from reproductive to menopausal years. You can count on our doctors to treat you as the individual you are, while providing personalized and expert fibroid treatment options.

What are Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow on or in the uterus. They are surprisingly common; it is estimated that 70% of women have fibroids. Many women may have these symptoms but only find out they have fibroids during a physical exam or a doctor-ordered ultrasound.

Symptoms to look for and ask your doctor about, include:

  • Periods that last longer than a week
  • Heavy periods causing bleeding through clothing
  • Pain and pressure in the stomach, pelvis or lower back
  • Painful sex
  • Unexplained exhaustion (may be due to anemia)
  • Having to go to the bathroom a little too often

Why Seek Treatment

When fibroid symptoms become severe and disruptive to daily activities, women have options for treatments which include: medical management, myomectomy, uterine artery embolism, and hysterectomy. Many fibroid patients do not seek treatment because they fear a hysterectomy is their only option. Our physicians offer a personalized approach to each patient’s unique fibroids, symptoms, and goals.

Another option is now available at Northridge Hospital. The Acessa® Radiofrequency Thermal Ablation Procedure is a leading-edge treatment for fibroids and clinically proven alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy. Northridge Hospital is the only hospital in the greater Los Angeles area to offer this minimally-invasive procedure specifically designed to treat fibroids and only fibroids. Learn more here.

Our doctors will explain each recommended procedure with you, including the goals, risks, and benefits. Recommendations will take into consideration fibroid size, how many you have, your age, and your reproductive goals. Your lifestyle and personal preferences are also important factors. Treatment results will vary woman to woman because every woman and every fibroid is different.
