Mental Health Awareness Month brings attention to behavioral side of weight loss

Dignity Health expert says success often depends on mindset and sustainable habits

(Chandler, Ariz. – May 19, 2026) – As more Arizonans turn to GLP-1 medications and bariatric surgery to help lose weight, Dignity Health experts say many patients overlook the importance of their mindset when it comes to long-term success.

During Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Dr. Shawn Stevenson, a bariatric surgeon and weight loss specialist with the Dignity Health Medical Group, is encouraging Valley residents to think beyond the scale and focus on behaviors and habits that support a healthier lifestyle and mind.

“Weight loss is rarely just about food,” said Dr. Stevenson. “Whether patients choose medication, surgery or lifestyle changes, long term success often depends on consistency, realistic expectations and sustainable habits."

GLP-1 medications are one of the most popular tools Arizonans are using alongside diet and exercise to achieve a healthy weight. At the same time, bariatric surgery remains one of the most effective long-term treatment options for obesity. But, Dr. Stevenson says no treatment is a magic fix.

“Tools like weight loss medications and minimally invasive surgery can be incredibly effective, but patients still have to address daily behaviors that impact overall health,” said Dr. Stevenson. “Things like activity level, sleep, stress management and support systems play an important role in maintaining long-term results.”

Dr. Stevenson said patients often achieve the best results when they focus on long-term lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes or unrealistic expectations fueled by social media.

“Healthy, sustainable weight loss is a journey and not an overnight transformation,” said Dr. Stevenson. “Patients tend to do their best when they focus on progress over perfection and understand meaningful change takes time.”

Dr. Stevenson said support systems can also play an important role in helping patients stay motivated and accountable during their weight loss journey. In addition to clinical care, the Dignity Health bariatric surgery and weight loss program offers a monthly support group that helps address the emotional, psychological and social factors that often accompany long-term weight management.
