A Distinctive Curriculum for a Distinctive Residency Experience
Our innovative new Family Medicine residency program trains prospective physicians in academic medicine centers, hospital settings, and in the community.
Our faculty knows that optimal learning and mentoring relies on listening. Residents want to be heard, respected and supported on their journey to become competent family physicians. These aren’t the only reasons why our residency program stands out.
Our innovative two-week mini-block approach, with rare exceptions, allows our residents to spend every other two-week block in our newly constructed, state-of-the-art, Family Medicine Practice Center.
In addition to our enthusiastic Family Medicine physician faculty, you will also experience training from our Behavioral Health Specialist, Sara Mavis, who has been a spectacular addition to our team. Having these professionals rounds out our full orbed approach to true family medicine patient care.
A unique collaboration with the Dignity Health Informatics team and with Cerner allows us to pilot new capabilities for EHR efficiencies. Our organization is currently piloting the use of our own AI platform (Insightly) for ambient scribing. We have volunteered our residency clinic to be a beta site for this project.
Friday afternoons are reserved for our didactic sessions which occur weekly over the entirety of the three-year program. These sessions cover a broad range of Family Medicine topics and include traditional lectures, hands-on workshops in our clinic and Sim Center, as well as discussion sessions. This is protected time for all of our FM residents.
We host a weekly Wednesday noon conference that includes resident-led journal clubs, case conferences, and M&M conferences. FM Grand Rounds take place during this series on a quarterly basis, featuring local and national thought leaders.
You will also receive instruction on inpatient and specialty rotations from attendings who love to teach.
Our program’s vibrant research programs include an annual “shark tank” where residents, faculty and attendings share their research projects, opening opportunities for resident participation. Second and third year residents also enjoy dedicated “Scholarly Activity” half days during FM blocks. As a result, many of our residents have already taken advantage of opportunities to present their work at the local, state and national levels.
Throughout your residency, you will prepare for a future in which you will both lead and work as part of a team. This is a dramatic change from the traditional approach of preparing physicians to practice alone.
