Greetings and welcome to St. Joseph's Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Training Program.
Welcome! My name is Robert Protell MD, and I am the Program Director of the Dignity Health St Joseph’s Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. Above all else, our goal is to provide our residents the highest quality training. Our mission is to train Internal Medicine specialists who will compassionately and competently provide quality care for the vibrant and culturally diverse community of San Joaquin County. In addition to the highest quality clinical education, residents will engage in research and scholarly work that builds on the medical knowledge vital for evidence-based clinical practices with a specific focus on improving healthcare.
Our vision is to become the medical institution of choice in Central California by delivering quality and compassionate healthcare to everyone in our community regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, immigration status, and/or disability. Our program offers an exceptional training environment that prepares residents to practice quality Internal Medicine and to become recognized leaders in patient care, patient advocacy, and patient-centered quality improvement initiatives.
We are a 3-year ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Training Program. Each year consists of 13 four week blocks.

St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Stockton, welcomed our inaugural class of Internal Medicine Residents in July 2020. Our Internal Medicine Residency Program features high-volume, multi-diverse and complex patients across our 355-bed facility that has been serving our community since 1899. St. Joseph’s Medical Centers Heart & Vascular Institute is nationally recognized and we have the only accredited cancer facility in the county as well as having a Certified Primary Stroke Center. Our Internal Medical Residency Program’s affiliation with the Touro University Medical Group’s Stockton Clinic has grown our range of care into the patient population that needs us most.
Our program’s clinical scope includes inpatient and outpatient medicine as well as subspecialty rotations including an intensive ICU curriculum with fellowship trained faculty. We offer training with state-of-the-art simulation lab methods, weekly didactics, academic journals, and a generous educational stipend for continued clinical knowledge elevation. Our Internal Medicine Residents’ education is constantly stimulated and enriched outside of the patient care settings. The unique combination of busy urban hospital surrounded by a moderately rural and underserved community yields excellent patient care experiences preparing our residents to provide unparalleled care to their patients.
