Men’s Health: Prioritize You

Dignity Health - St. Rose Dominican is committed to providing innovative therapies that empower men to live longer, healthier lives.

Healthy Aging for Men

Prioritizing health as men age is crucial for reducing the risk of serious illness, maintaining independence, and improving quality of life. Getting preventive care, including regular screenings and annual check-ups with a Primary Care physician, enables early detection and effective treatment of potential health issues.

These efforts are further enhanced by adopting healthy lifestyle factors, which play a vital role in men's overall health and well-being:

  • Nutrition: Focus on a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Minimize processed foods, sugary drinks, and saturated fats.
  • Physical Activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly, including strength training.
  • Healthy Weight: Maintaining a healthy weight significantly lowers the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and some cancers.
  • Smoking Cessation: Quitting smoking is vital for preventing heart disease, lung cancer, and other serious health issues.
  • Alcohol: If you drink, do so in moderation (up to two drinks per day for men). Excessive alcohol can harm your liver and heart. If you don't drink, there's no need to begin.
  • Sleep: Prioritize 7-8 hours of sleep each night for optimal physical and mental well-being.
  • Stress Management: Manage stress through healthy activities like exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones. Learn how stress can affect your heart and body.

It's important to be involved in your own healthcare. Keep an eye on things like your blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate, blood sugar, and waist size. And don't forget to learn about your family's medical history – it can help you spot potential health risks early on.

Knowledge is power. Learn more about blood pressure and cholesterol and how they can impact your health.

Prostate Health in Las Vegas and Henderson

The prostate is a small gland, about the size of a walnut, located below the bladder in men. It plays a vital role in male reproductive health, primarily by producing fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Maintaining good prostate health is important as men age, as the prostate is susceptible to several conditions.

One of the most common is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, which can cause urinary problems. Prostatitis, an inflammation or infection of the prostate, can also occur. Less common, but more serious, is prostate cancer.

Dignity Health – St. Rose Dominican Hospitals understands the prostate health challenges men face as they age. We are committed to providing innovative therapies that empower men to live longer, healthier lives.

An enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition in older men. It occurs when the prostate gland continues to grow, putting pressure on the urethra and bladder. This can lead to a variety of bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms that can affect a man's well-being and lifestyle. These symptoms can include:

  • Needing to urinate more often, both during the day and at night
  • Experiencing a strong, sudden urge to urinate
  • Accidental urine leakage (incontinence)
  • Having a weak urine stream
  • Straining to begin or finish urinating
  • A urine stream that starts and stops intermittently

At Siena and San Martin Hospitals, we provide Waterjet Ablation Therapy, an innovative solution for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This minimally invasive procedure utilizes a robot-assisted waterjet, guided by ultrasound imaging, to precisely target and remove obstructive prostate tissue. Our specially trained urologists use this technology to create a customized treatment plan based on each patient's unique anatomy. The real-time visualization of the prostate during the procedure, accessed through the urethra, allows for enhanced decision-making and monitoring, while carefully preserving areas responsible for sexual function and continence. Patients typically experience a short recovery period with minimal side effects.

Benefits of Waterjet Ablation Therapy

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals offers prostate brachytherapy, a radiation treatment for prostate cancer. This technique involves placing tiny radioactive "seeds" directly into the prostate gland. These seeds deliver a high dose of radiation to the tumor while protecting nearby healthy tissues.

Here's how it works:

  • Radioactive Seeds: These are small pellets, about the size of a grain of rice, containing radioactive materials like iodine-125 or palladium-103.
  • Permanent (LDR) vs. Temporary (HDR): Brachytherapy can be either permanent or temporary.
    • LDR (Low-Dose-Rate) Brachytherapy (Permanent): The seeds remain in the prostate permanently, slowly releasing radiation until they become inactive.
    • HDR (High-Dose-Rate) Brachytherapy (Temporary): A radioactive source is placed in the prostate for a short time (minutes) and then removed. This may be repeated in multiple sessions.

What are the advantages of prostate brachytherapy?

Precise Placement: Using ultrasound or CT scans, doctors carefully guide needles to place the seeds exactly where they need to be, targeting the cancerous tissue.

  • Targeted Radiation: The seeds release radiation over weeks or months, destroying cancer cells. Because the radiation travels only a short distance, it minimizes damage to surrounding healthy organs like the bladder and rectum.
