Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center’s birthing center recently received a prestigious recognition from a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The hospital which last year delivered more than 2,500 babies, was recognized for its optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies by the Baby Friendly Initiative. The designation, which was announced after a rigorous on-site survey of the hospital’s birthing center, is awarded to hospitals who focus on providing patients with a family-centered experience.

“Mercy Gilbert has long been known for the wonderful care and support it provides to its new moms and their babies and we are very proud to receive this prominent designation,” says Mark Slyter, President and Chief Executive Officer at Mercy Gilbert.

Based on a global effort to improve the role of maternity services, the Baby Friendly Initiative is aimed at improving the care of pregnant women and newborns. The program honors health facilities that provide maternity services that promote and support breastfeeding.
