When is Neurological Testing Performed?

Neurologists specialize in treating traumatic brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, brain disorders such as epilepsy, and even sleep disorders.

Neurological exams, which include an evaluation of nerve, spine, and brain function, are sometimes all a neurologist needs to make a diagnosis. However, symptoms of many different neurological disorders are similar. For this reason, a neurologist will use diagnostic testing to confirm a diagnosis or rule out certain non-neurological conditions.

Common neurological diagnostic tests include:

  • Electromyogram (EMG)
  • Neurological CT scan, also known as a brain and spine CT scan
  • Brain scan
  • Myelography
  • Visual evoked potential (VEP)
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP or SEP)
  • Evoked potential (EP)
  • Brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP)

What to Expect During Diagnostic Testing for Neurological Assessment

Some neurological diagnostic testing consists of noninvasive imaging scans or electrical impulse recording, such as an EEG. Others are invasive, such as myelography. No matter which type of diagnostic testing you need, your neurology team will tell you what to expect and how to minimize any risk of complications.

Whether diagnostic testing takes place in a Dignity Health - St. Rose Dominican outpatient center, a doctor’s office, or a hospital, you will be kept as comfortable as possible.

You may receive the results of your test right away or it may take several days for your doctor to analyze the images or test results.

Recovering after Diagnostic Testing at Dignity Health - St. Rose Dominican Hospitals

Some diagnostic tests require you to spend time in a recovery area. For tests that require a skin puncture, including imaging tests with injection of contrast material, you will receive instructions on how to care for the needle site and what types of activities should be avoided.

Simple imaging studies usually do not require recovery time. After they are complete, you are most often free to return to home or work.

Neurological diagnostic testing helps your doctor make a diagnosis as soon as possible. This allows you to begin treatment as early as possible.
